The publication is devoted to the history of one of the oldest and largest institutions in the world dealing with the problems of human infectious pathology and developing the scientific basis of fighting infectious diseases – N.F. Gamaleya Institute for Epidemiology & Microbiology of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation. More than a century ago the initiative of one enthusiast doctor who clearly understood the call of the time gave a start to the process of establishing our institution. Having lived through the turbulent 20th century with all its cataclysms, the institution never stopped its research activities even for a day, continuously developing in accordance with its challenges getting more and more complicated. The science pioneers and enthusiasts directed their energy to the noble purpose of protecting the humanity against deaths and diseases. Nowadays, after a number of transformations, the institution has become the main federal center of infectology.

A historical sketch precedes the main body of the book represented by a collection of caricatures and epigrams devoted to the most prominent representatives of the Gamaleya school of thought at various stages of more than 120-year history of the institution.
