The publication provides the taxonomy and the list of Shigella bacteria, taking into consideration their morphological, biochemical, serological, and molecular genetic properties. It reviews the pathogenicity factors of dysentery bacteria and their genetic control, describes the key mechanisms of pathogenicity factors transport, the role of endotoxine in the disease pathogenesis, development of the host's immune response to the infection and the apoptosis phenomenon in the course of the shigellosis process. The relation between the shigella persistence factors and the course of the infection process in experimental and clinical conditions is analyzed.

Special attention is paid to clinical representation, diagnostics, and treatment of shigelloses at the current stage. The problems of dysentery epidemiology are reviewed from the point of view of infectious pathology, including the information and analytic system of monitoring seasonal incidence of the disease and special prevention measures.

the monograph is intended for microbiologists, epidemiologists, infectious disease doctors, attendees of the skill improvement courses, and medical students.
